Fine Arts Art classes provide students with opportunities to learn and apply knowledge about design and to experiment with creative problem solving. An art teacher posed this challenge to middle school students: "camouflage" a triangle in a design. The result? A set of abstract designs by Immaculata middle schoolers that took fourth place for a middle school team in the North Carolina State Fair Art and Photography Exhibit (2002). Intermediate grade students also gained recognition for their three-dimensional tube drawings. Middle school students who want to explore art-making further can choose Art Club as one of their electives. Music Through music classes, students in all grades learn to appreciate music of all kinds by experimenting with rhythm and sound and by learning some musical notation and theory. In addition, students learn and practice the songs and responses that are part of the liturgies. Thus, faith and knowledge connect. Band The after-school band is a wonderful opportunity for students in grades 5-8 to learn to play a band instrument, to read music, and to participate in a band. The band plays at special school occasions. Chorus Students in grades 6-8 can choose chorus as one of their electives. There is also opportunity for very interested younger students to participate in the chorus. The chorus leads the school in song during all school liturgies. The chorus plays a very important role in making the liturgies come alive for all involved. Drama Every year middle school students prepare for and perform in a drama production. An ambitious endeavor, the drama production involves many students as actors and actresses, stage crew members, set designers, and costume makers. Many parents and other volunteers also help out. In past years performances have including: Annie, Guys and Dolls, Into the Woods, Scenes from A Midsummer's Night Dream and the Wizard of Oz. |
