Immaculata Catholic School is a coeducational parochial school sponsored by Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham, North Carolina. The school enrolls students in pre-kindergarten through grade 8. It has approximately 400 students and 25 full- time faculty.
Founded in 1909, the school was originally served by the Sisters of St. Dominic of Newburgh, New York. The sisters believed that a Christian Catholic education that demands academic excellence should be available to any family who sought such an education.
Dedication to developing the whole child and to providing sound grounding in reading, writing, mathematics, and critical thinking have characterized the curriculum since the school's founding. Faculty and staff have endeavored to challenge students spiritually, intellectually, artistically, athletically, and socially in ways that promote growth. In this way, throughout its history, Immaculata has served students from all over Durham, from many backgrounds, and of many faiths.
This tradition of academic excellence continues today. Immaculata follows the standard course of study set forth by the Diocese of Raleigh. These curriculum guidelines are based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and national standards established by professional education organizations. Immaculata's average student scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills have consistently been in the top third, and mostly in the top quarter, of all students taking the test.
Immaculata is located in downtown Durham on the campus of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The school building is located on Burch Avenue. In addition to the classrooms and offices, the school includes a media center, computer lab, art and music rooms, a playing field, and combination gymnasium and cafeteria.
