| A Learning Community - Special Subject Areas: Prekindergarten through 8th Grade | |
|
Overview Immaculata Catholic School offers special subject area instruction in art, media center, music, physical education, and Spanish. All students participate in the art, music, physical education and Spanish programs which follow the Diocese of Raleigh curriculum guidelines. Students in middle school explore the media center and use of research media as part of their core course work. Art The purpose of the art program is to provide students with experiences to explore a variety of media, to invent and create, and to express individuality. Students also investigate topics in art history and appreciate cultural diversity. They learn and apply elements of design. Media Center For students in prekindergarten through grade 3, the curriculum focuses on learning and appreciating different types of literature. Fourth and fifth graders learn to use the media center to conduct research. For middle schoolers, use of the media center is integrated into subject areas. Music The purpose of the music program is to help students develop appreciation for the power of music, the ability to perceive music as an art form, and to understand music as a means of expressing feelings and ideas. Children sing at weekly Mass and prayer service and perform for special occasions. An extracurricular middle school band provides opportunities for interested students to learn a band instrument and to perform as part of a band. Physical Education The physical education program involves students in a wide range of activities and encourages a life-long commitment to physical activity. Students learn self-discipline and sportsmanship. The knowledge of specific sports and physical exercise that students gain will enable them to participate in sports and exercise in diverse settings. Spanish Prekindergarten through second grade students learn basic Spanish vocabulary and information about the Spanish-speaking world. In grades 3-5, students begin to use basic conversation and phrases and are introduced to the spoken vocabulary of their world. In grades 6-8, the goal of the program is to involve students more fully in Spanish literacy with emphasis on grammar rules. Eighth graders have the opportunity to take Spanish more often in preparation for high school Spanish. Computer/Technology A fully-equipped computer lab enables students to use computer technology in their subject area classes. Each class has a scheduled weekly time in the computer lab. |
